Common Gantry Cranes Vs Container Gantry Cranes – What’s The Difference Between Them

What is the difference between a gantry crane and a container gantry crane? They are both the same type of crane in many regards, but there are the differences, too. For example, you often see a container crane (grua para contenedores) used as a ship to shore crane. They are great for loading those intermodal containers.

A common gantry crane, on the other hand, is often used within various industrial facilities and is mobile. They come in various capacities, and they all lift heavy loads. A container crane is going to be more heavy duty when it comes to the lifting, but each type of crane is highly durable.

The supporting framework for a container crane is going to be quite large. It’s no secret that these machines lift some of the heaviest loads. A common gantry crane on the other hand can be a whole lot smaller, with a lifting capacity of less than a ton. Granted, there are common gantry cranes that lift loads a lot heavier than that, too.

The common gantry crane (La grúa pórtico común) is meant to be a portable alternative to a jib crane. The jib cranes are attached or mounted to a wall, making them immobile. They come with their advantages, too, but it is clear that manufacturers prefer the gantry crane if it’s possible to use one to get the job done.

Gantry cranes of all types can save you time and money. If you’re looking for a container crane, there are certainly different types, too. They fall into two major categories, however, the low profile and high profile container gantry cranes.

They also come in different sizes. If you are looking at pictures of these cranes, you might see an enormous model and think that’s not what you need. Yet there are smaller versions, and indeed, there are four different sizes to choose from. Aside from the smallest models, there is panamax, post-panamax and super post-panamax.

You might be looking at super post-panamax cranes if you see enormous models. Yet it should be mentioned again that container cranes are going to be larger than most normal gantry cranes that are located within industrial facilities. And they are most often used for ship to shore container handling.

Talk with crane manufacturers (fabricantes de grúas) to determine what you need to get for your company. You can describe the heavy lifting that you need to do and talk about the space you have to work with. They will make recommendations based on what they have to offer clients. Then you can talk about setup and installation, too.

You want to be working with a manufacturer that makes this easier on you. You want the best crane system in place to handle the needs of your facility. Is that going to be the common gantry crane, the container gantry crane or a crane of a different type? After looking at the various models available and their specs, you will be able to make the best decision based on your operations and your needs.
